秋田竿燈まつり – Akita Lantern Festival –

竿燈前日である8/2。
長岡花火の撮影の裏側を是非読んでほしいのですが、私は8/2の22時時点で、まだ新潟県長岡にいた。

そう、長岡花火大会の撮影を終え、一路向かうは山形。山形！？
長岡花火の影響もあり、宿は高騰。新潟県内のホテルは、私の予算ではとてもではないが宿泊できない高騰ぶり。
アパも空きなし、ビジネスホテルも40,000円台以上。
とてもじゃないが泊まれず、この日宿泊したのは山形の鶴岡だった。
22時出発で、秋田に帰ると大変な時間になり、そんな体力も気力もなく、一泊することが決まっていたのだが
それにしても、撮影後の4時間運転は流石に体力が必要でした。
もう一泊してゆっくり観光でもしてと思っていたが、翌日からこの記事の主役である秋田竿燈まつりが秋田市で開催されるため、8/3には秋田に戻る必要があったのだ。
この時期、東北はどこもかしこも、夏祭り。
青森のねぶた祭りとほぼ同時期。
山形に着いたのは、午前2-3時ごろ。
翌日のことを考慮し、すぐに眠りについたのだった。

花火の撮影は、3台体制だったこともあり、データ容量が半端ない。
4Kや8Kの撮影となると、本当にデータの保管が大変である。
SDカードに保管されているが、消えるのが怖いので早くHDDにデータを移したい。
一旦事務所に戻り、データの荷下ろしを行いたかったので、ホテルをチェックアウト後、どこにも寄らずに秋田市へ。
もっとゆっくり新潟観光をしたいと願うばかりだが、それは来年へお預けである。

無事に秋田に戻ると、街はどこかお祭り雰囲気。
いつもの街並みがこのお祭り期間だけは、ちょっと違って見えるのは気のせいだろうか。
大曲や長岡のような、爆発的な混み具合はないが、いつもよりやや車も多いような。

正直に話すと、中学校以来、地元であったが、竿燈をほとんど見ていなかった。
小さい時は、本当に毎年楽しみで、親に連れて行ってもらうのが毎年の恒例行事だった。
いつからだろうか、竿燈がつまらないと思ったのは。
なんか、粗荒さにかけるというか。インパクトが足りないというか。
そんなわけで、高校生〜社会人と、20年近く竿燈から遠ざかっていたのである。

縁あって、地元に戻ることになり、そして、縁あって、このお祭り男チャンネル、通称4Kさんが誕生したのである。
この時、本当に久しぶりに竿燈を見て、あ〜、こんなに面白かったんだ竿燈は。と感じたのを今でも覚えている。
それから、4年。毎年、秋田市より撮影許可をもらい、撮影を続けている。
今では、このチャンネルを支える屋台骨といえるお祭りである。
LIVE配信をはじめ、多くの視聴者から認知してもらった。
こんなにありがたいことはない。
今、新しい企画というか、もっとこのチャンネルだからできることを求めて企画を進行中である。
これは、まだ公開できないが、いつか形となり公開できる映像になったら、是非見てほしい。

まだ見たことがない人もたくさんいるでしょうし、いつか現地観戦をされる方の参考に少しでもなればと思いここからは記事を書きたいと思います。
秋田竿燈まつりは、夜スタートで毎年下記のようなスケジュールで開催される。
8/3 ~ 8/6 の4日間である。日取りが固定ですので、曜日は毎年まちまち。
いい感じのカレンダーもあれば、ほぼ全部平日という年もある。
これは、時代にあった運用もあっていいのではないかと思うが、これは歴史と伝統を重んじる？みたいな？
開催される時間は、全日すべて一緒なので、将来的に現地に遊びに来る方は是非。

あっという間の4日間

いよいよ竿燈当日を迎えるわけなんですけれども、秋田市の中心地にある関東大通りで毎年演舞が行われます。
毎年6時50分にのろしが上がって、そこから各町内が入場してくるんですね。
入り口は秋田県庁側と秋田駅前側の2つがあって、今年は事務所や機材の都合で秋田駅前側から撮影を始めました。

YouTubeの動画を見てもらえればわかりますが、人が多い中移動しながら撮るスタイルなるので、電波が安定する秋田駅側のエリアに限定して撮影した、という背景があります。
視聴者の中で、町内が限定されていて、もっと多くの町内が見たいとの感想をもらいましたが、電波の関係でなかなか難しく、心苦しいばかりです。
来年はなんとか最新の危機と衛星インターネットをいろいろな箇所に配置して、もっと良い映像が届けられるように工夫してみます。
いかんせん、竿燈に関しては、規模が大きく、私だけの日と、カメラマンを発注して2名体制で撮影している日があり
それでも撮影は本当に大変なんです。
機材も結構な重量があり、それを2時間近く手持ちでぶん回しているわけなので、毎年手がパンパンになりますｗ

竿燈の演舞は第1演舞、第2演舞、第3演舞と分かれていて、各部で町内がローテーションするから、現地で見る人は一日に違う町内を何度か楽しめるんです。
それから各日の最終演舞と最終日は、竹を継ぎ足して、高さを出すため、竿燈がかなり”しなる”シーンが本当に見どころです。
今にも折れそうな竿燈と、それを技術で折れないようにしながら演技を行う。
とんでもない角度で50kgもある竿燈を持ち上げる。
本当に見ていてハラハラです。

今年は最終日に8月6日、珍しく雨が降って、2部が終わった段階で「今年はこれで終わります！」と中止になったんです。
みんなびっくりでしたが、その後ゲリラ豪雨で土砂降りになって大変でした。
最終日の映像は残しているのですが、実はこの動画の後に大変な豪雨になり、近くのオフィスビルの軒先で1時間近く雨宿りしておりました。
なかなか雨は止まず。
滝のような雨で、機材があったため、なかなか動けず。
大変な思いでした。
竿燈に参加されていた人たちも本当に大変だったかと思います。

お祭り男は、次のステップに挑戦します！
竿燈は、お祭り男のコンテンツの中でも、最初にチャンネルを知ってもらえた思い入れのある祭りです。
そんなお祭りに何か貢献したい！新しいことがしたい！ということで、現在新しい企画を考えて動きだしております。
これは発表できる段階になりましたら、別途記事にまとめたいと思います。

来年以降はもう少し改善を考えて、より良い形でお届けできればと思っています。

🎆 Behind the Scenes of Filming – On the Eve of Kanto (August 2)

August 2nd — the day before the Kanto Festival.
I really want you to read this behind-the-scenes story of filming the Nagaoka Fireworks… because at 10 PM on August 2nd, I was still in Nagaoka, Niigata.
Yes—right after finishing the filming of the Nagaoka Fireworks, I hit the road toward… Yamagata.
Yamagata!?
Because of the fireworks festival, hotel prices in Niigata had skyrocketed. Every place was way over my budget.
APA Hotel? Fully booked.
Business hotels? Over 40,000 yen a night.
No way I could stay.

So I ended up staying the night in Tsuruoka, Yamagata instead.
If I had driven all the way back to Akita starting at 10 PM, it would’ve been absolutely brutal—and honestly, I didn’t have the strength or the energy for that. Still, even driving four hours after a full day of shooting was physically exhausting.
I did think about staying another night and slowly sightseeing around Niigata…
But starting the very next day was the main event of this article — the Akita Kanto Festival, held in Akita City. So I had to be back in Akita by August 3rd.

Around this time of year, summer festivals are happening everywhere in Tohoku — same timing as the Nebuta Festival in Aomori.
I arrived in Yamagata around 2–3 AM, and went straight to sleep thinking about the next day.

💾 The Reality of Shooting in 4K & 8K

Since I was filming with a three-camera setup, the amount of data was insane.
When you’re shooting in 4K and 8K, managing storage becomes a serious challenge. Everything is saved on SD cards, but I’m always afraid of losing data — so I can’t relax until everything is safely backed up to HDDs.
That’s why, after checking out of the hotel, I went straight back to Akita without stopping anywhere. I just wanted to offload the footage at my office as soon as possible.
Honestly… I wish I could have taken my time to explore Niigata more. That’ll have to wait until next year.

🏮 Akita, Back in Festival Mode

Once I made it back safely to Akita, the whole city already felt like festival mode.
The streets I see every day somehow look completely different during this season.
It’s not as insanely crowded as Omagari or Nagaoka, but traffic was definitely heavier than usual.
To be honest, even though Akita is my hometown, I barely watched the Kanto Festival after junior high school.

As a kid, I looked forward to it every year. My parents would take me — it was our annual tradition.
But somewhere along the way, I started thinking, “Kanto isn’t that exciting anymore.”
Maybe it felt less impactful… less rough and intense somehow.
And just like that, I stayed away from Kanto for nearly 20 years — through high school and into adult life.

🎥 Reconnecting with Kanto Through This Channel

By chance, I returned to my hometown.
And by another stroke of fate, this channel — also known as “4K-san” — was born.

The first time I saw Kanto again after so many years, I remember clearly thinking:
“Wow… Kanto is actually this amazing.”

It’s been four years since then. Every year, I receive official filming permission from Akita City and continue shooting the festival.
Now, Kanto has become one of the core pillars that supports this channel.

Through live streams and videos, so many viewers have discovered the channel. I’m truly grateful for that.
Right now, I’m also working on a brand-new project — something only this channel can do. I can’t reveal it yet, but when it finally takes shape and goes public, I really hope you’ll check it out.

📅 Kanto Festival Schedule (For First-Time Visitors)

For those who’ve never seen it, or who plan to visit someday, here’s a quick overview of the Kanto Festival schedule.
The festival is held every year from August 3rd to August 6th — four fixed days. Since the dates never change, the weekdays vary each year. Sometimes it lands perfectly on a weekend, and sometimes… it’s all weekdays.
The performance schedule is the same every day:

• 18:15 – Traffic restrictions begin (main route from 18:00)

• 18:50 – Kanto enter the street

• 19:15–20:35 – Main Kanto performances

• 20:35–20:50 – Interactive Kanto session (“Fureai Kanto”)

• 20:50 – Kanto exit

• 21:00 – Event ends (traffic restrictions until 21:30)

And just like that, four intense days fly by.

📡 The Reality of Live Streaming the Festival

On the day of the festival, performances take place every year on Kanto Odori Street in central Akita City.
At 6:50 PM, a signal flare goes up, and the local teams begin entering one after another.
There are two main entrances — one near the Akita Prefectural Office, and one near Akita Station.
This year, due to equipment logistics, I started filming from the Akita Station side.

If you watch the YouTube streams, you’ll see that I move through the crowd while filming. To keep the signal stable, I had to limit shooting to areas with reliable reception — mainly around the station.
Some viewers mentioned they wanted to see more teams from other areas, and I truly understand that. But due to network limitations, it’s been difficult… and honestly, it hurts that I can’t show everything.

Next year, I’m planning to upgrade with newer equipment and satellite internet and try placing them in multiple locations to improve coverage.
Even now, filming Kanto is no joke. Some days it’s just me, and on other days I hire another cameraman. But even with two people, it’s still incredibly demanding.
The gear is heavy, and holding it for nearly two hours straight every night really destroys your arms. Every year without fail, my hands are completely wrecked by the end 😂

⚡ The Most Thrilling Moments of Kanto

The performances are divided into the First, Second, and Third Rounds, with different local teams rotating through each section. So if you’re watching in person, you can enjoy different teams multiple times in one night.
The absolute highlight is the final round of the night — and especially the last day.
That’s when they extend the bamboo poles even higher. The Kanto bend dramatically, swaying like they’re about to snap at any second.
Watching performers control 50 kg poles at insane angles with pure technique… it’s absolutely nerve-wracking.

You can’t help but gasp.

🌧️ An Unexpected Ending on the Final Day

On August 6th, the final day this year, it unexpectedly started raining.
After the second round, the announcement came:
“Due to weather conditions, today’s event will now end.”

Everyone was shocked.
Soon after, a sudden torrential downpour hit — the kind that feels like standing under a waterfall.
I do have footage from that final day, but right after filming ended, the rain became so intense that I had to shelter under the eaves of a nearby office building for nearly an hour.

The rain just wouldn’t stop.
With all my gear, I couldn’t move easily. It was rough.
I can only imagine how hard it must have been for the performers as well.

🚀 What’s Next for Festival Freak?

Kanto is the festival that first introduced many viewers to this channel. It’s deeply special to me.
That’s why I want to give something back. I want to challenge something new.
Right now, I’ve already started moving forward with a brand-new project connected to Kanto. Once it’s ready to be announced, I’ll share it in a separate article.

From next year onward, I’ll keep improving things and aim to deliver even better coverage.
And hopefully… I’ll see you again next year at Kanto.
